Vol. 202 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Additional ESB Power Station.

6.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if the ESB will consider building an additional power station at Arigna, County Roscommon, to use the surplus coal now available there, and thus secure constant employment for the miners who are working only three out of every four weeks.

Before a practicable proposal to extend the Arigna generating station can be formulated, it is necessary to establish that the coal reserves, which are of poor quality and are in thin seams, can be extracted at a cost which would make the use of the coal economic. An investigation to that end is proceeding and will, I hope, be concluded this year.
