Vol. 203 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Forestry Works.

83.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that 14 foresters have recently been paid off at Fintra forestry, Killybegs, County Donegal; and, if so, if he will have these men reinstated as soon as possible, in view of the lack of employment in this locality.

It is not possible to reinstate the men recently laid off at Kilcar forest as sufficient work is not available to provide employment for them. There are 30 men still employed at the forest.

84.

asked the Minister for Lands how many men have been laid off in the nursery attached to Mulroy forest, County Donegal; the date on which they were laid off; and if there is any hope of having them re-employed.

Five men were laid off at Mulroy forest nursery on 26th April and I regret to say that there are no immediate prospects of re-employing them. The staff employed at the forest totals 41 men.

Could the Minister say whether these men who were laid off were long-service or short-service workers?

I can say from experience that the practice in my Department is: last in, first out.

I would agree with that.
