Vol. 203 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commission on Irish Language.

7.

asked the Taoiseach the number of meetings of the Commission on the Irish Language in each year since it was established.

I understand that 148 meetings of the Commission and of its sub-committees have been held since the Commission was established in July, 1958.

8.

asked the Taoiseach whether the Report of the Commission on the Irish Language has yet been drafted; if so, when it will be printed; and, if not, when it will be drafted and printed.

I have, at present, nothing to add to my reply to a question addressed to me in this House on 7th of this month regarding the report of the Commission.

Does the Taoiseach not think, now that we have achieved 148 meetings of this Commission, that the Oireachtas are entitled to expect that out of this mountain a mouse will ultimately emerge?

The Deputy must remember that a large number of very busy people are giving their time voluntarily to the work of this Commission. I think we should commend them for the amount of time and labour they are devoting to this work and express the hope that this labour and time will bring about a valuable report.

I second the Taoiseach's pious aspirations, but inasmuch as the Commission have sat for five years, with 148 meetings, surely the Oireachtas are entitled to expect their zeal will not carry them into an indefinite number of meetings, like the man who went into the dialect of Dingle and was stopped at the 270,000th word.

I replied to questions on the matter of this report a couple of weeks ago.

He promised me a report two years ago.

A couple of interim reports have been prepared.
