Vol. 204 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pay Increase.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice what is the present position in regard to the claim for a wage increase by members of the Garda Síochána; and when a final decision may be expected.

The Chairman of the Garda Arbitration Board today submitted to myself and the Minister for Finance for submission to the Government reports on the recent pay claims brought on behalf of members of the Garda Síochána up to the rank of chief superintendent.

The report will be submitted to the Government for consideration as soon as possible.

29.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been drawn to the dissatisfaction among members of the Garda Síochána with the lapse of time involved in dealing with their pay claims; and whether there is any action open to him whereby he could expedite such matters.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the general dissatisfaction among members of the Gardaí at the continued delay in reaching a decision on salary and wage claims; and what action he proposes to take to expedite a decision on these claims and so allay the general uneasiness which exists.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 29 and 30 together.

I have received no complaints in this regard from the Garda Representative Bodies.

I do not accept that there has been any avoidable delay on the part of the Government Departments concerned and, indeed, I am satisfied that the claims were dealt with with commendable expedition on their part.
