Vol. 204 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation of Transferred CIE Workers.

44.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Local Government whether, where men are transferred to Dublin as a result of reorganisation in CIE and are unable, because of administrative difficulties in the Corporation to be rehoused in Dublin, he will arrange to provide them with free travel facilities to their homes in Dundalk and Drogheda, County Louth, while the accommodation problems are being dealt with.

45.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that men transferred to Dublin as a result of the CIE reorganisation schemes are unable in many cases to get accommodation for themselves and their families because they have not the necessary residence qualifications; and what steps he proposes to take to deal with this matter.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 44 and 45 together.

I have no functions in regard to the provision of travel facilities as suggested by the Deputies.

It is for the Dublin Corporation to assess the merits of housing applications made to them and to decide what action is appropriate in individual cases.

Would it be possible for the corporation to set aside their residence qualification if they are going to give people of this kind housing priority?

That is a matter to which I could not answer yes or no. The corporation could not decide to set aside anything while providing for those entitled to housing priority.

In view of the fact that this is a problem likely to arise more frequently in the future as a result of the Government's suggestions for redeployment of industry, could the general problem not be re-examined to see what steps could be taken to facilitate local authorities?

Local authorities will be facilitated in every possible way to meet this or any other problem that may arise.
