Vol. 204 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Delay in Delivery of Telegrams.

62.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that considerable delays occur in the delivery of telegrams from subpost offices, owing to the fact that they are delivered only with the normal post; and whether, in view of the obvious necessity that telegrams should be delivered with the greatest possible speed, he will take steps to have special arrangements made for their rapid delivery.

Telegrams received at sub-post offices are delivered as expeditiously as possible, usually by messenger or by telephone. Special steps are taken to effect quick delivery of messages of a life and death nature.

Telegrams delivered with the normal post are generally non-urgent telegrams handed in late on the previous evening and confirmatory copies of messages already delivered by telephone.

The present arrangements are considered to be generally satisfactory.

Is the Minister aware of a case in his own constituency where a telegram was sent from London and the person who sent it arrived home from London with his father in time to take delivery of the telegram?
