Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Car Ferry Service at Dún Laoghaire.

8.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power, what is the present position about the proposed car-ferry service at Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

British Railways have announced their intention of operating a car-ferry service between Holyhead and Dún Laoghaire, commencing in May, 1965. I have undertaken that the necessary terminal facilities will be provided in good time at Dún Laoghaire harbour. The question of the siting of the terminal has been under careful examination. The most readily available satisfactory site for such a terminal would be at the East Pier. The possibility of using other sites is also under examination. The matter has been the subject of discussion with representatives of the Dún Laoghaire Corporation, but no final decision in the matter has yet been taken.

Could the Minister give an assurance to the House that the setting up of this new car ferry will not in any way have a detrimental impact on the Rosslare-Fishguard service?

I have no information that it will have any effect on the Rosslare-Fishguard service. No intimation has been given to me that it will alter the service.

Will the Minister also give an assurance that he will be prepared to spend a like amount of money on Rosslare Harbour, in proportion to the service there that——

That should be a separate matter.

I will have to investigate any proposal put forward for a ferry service before I could give an assurance and the matter would require the consent of the Minister for Finance.

May I further ask the Minister if he has received any scheme in reference to Rosslare-Fishguard?

Will Deputies remember that there are 134 Questions on the Order Paper?

I have only asked three supplementary questions.

Did I understand the Minister to say that he intends to consult with Dún Laoghaire Borough Council?
