Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Local Forestry Labour.

77.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there is grave discontent in the Kilmovee-Charlestown area of County Mayo over the refusal of the Forestry Branch of his Department to employ any local labour on the new afforestation programme in the area; and that his Department have ignored representations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of the grave discontent to which the Deputy refers. Preliminary work on an area of 26½ acres recently acquired in Kilmovee district commenced on 14th September, 1963. The lands form part of Ballinlough forest and men were transferred from other properties of that forest to deal with the preparatory work at Kilmovee. It is anticipated that it will be possible to employ some local men when planting of the lands commences in a month's time or so. I would point out, however, that the small acreage involved must restrict the amount and duration of the employment which can be provided.

78.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Forestry Branch of his Department have recently commenced work at Beaghmore, Fintown, County Donegal, and have employed no local labour; if so, if he will take immediate steps to ensure that local labour will be employed on this project.

I am advised that work commenced at Beaghmore, Gweebarra forest, on 10th of this month. With regard to the second part of the Deputy's question, my information is that two local men have been offered employment.
