Vol. 205 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Call Delays.

87.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person on telephone number 373360, endeavouring to telephone 909591 at 2.40 p.m. on 29th July, 1963, was not connected when he dialled the number on four occasions; and why, on dialling for the fifth time, he connected with two other lines on which people were talking and at the same time connected with 909591.

88.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person on telephone number 909591 who thrice dialled 373360 at 2.30 p.m. or thereabouts on 29th July last was unable to make any connection with the number dialled; and why the supervisor, when asked, was able to connect with the number called.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 87 and 88 together.

As dialled telephone calls are worked entirely by mechanical process it is not possible to say precisely why difficulties were experienced with the calls in question. It is likely that they were caused by a fault in the automatic exchange equipment. The Supervisor would have routed the call through different equipment.
