Vol. 205 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Public Pumps.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give sanction to a scheme for the provision of public pumps by Offaly County Council, including a public pump to be erected at Gurtacur, Mount Bolus, Tullamore; and if he will now convey his approval to the Council so that the scheme can be carried out immediately.

Sanitary authorities were informed in 1959 that public pumps should be considered only where piped water supplies could not be provided at reasonable cost. From the information submitted by Offaly County Council in regard to the areas, including Gurtacur, in which they propose to provide pumps, it would appear that piped water supplies can be provided at reasonable cost. I intend therefore to ask the council to reconsider the matter and formulate proposals for the provision of piped water supplies in these areas either directly or by means of co-operative group schemes.
