Vol. 205 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Hams and Bacon.

24.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the present scarcity of hams and bacon and the consequent steep increase in the price of these commodities to the consumer; and if he will state the reason for this scarcity and the consequent price increases.

I have had some representations on this matter but I am not aware of any general scarcity of bacon and hams. The Pigs and Bacon Commission have informed me that the position is constantly being kept under close review by them and that they are taking steps to prevent the possibility of any scarcity of gammons for the pre-Christmas trade.

Is the Minister prepared to comment on that part of the question which refers to the steep increase in the price of these commodities to the consumer? Is he aware of that steep increase?

I have no information on that. Anyhow, I have no control over bacon prices on the home market.

I see. That is very interesting.
