Vol. 205 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Grand Canal.

26.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has received strong representations from the midland hoteliers and the Inland Waterways Association in connection with the proposed closing of the Grand Canal; and if, in view of the merit of their protest, he will meet with their wishes and indicate to CIE that he does not approve of the proposal for the closing of the Grand Canal.

I have received such representations from the Inland Waterways Association but not from midland hoteliers; as to the second part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave to questions on this subject on 23rd October, 1963.

Is it not a fact that there is a proposal to close down a considerable section of the canal and that on the end thereof stands the city of Dublin?

The Minister for Local Government has answered a question on that specific matter. It does not alter the position that there has to be legislation if any change is to be made.

The Minister will be very careful about bringing in legislation on that.
