Vol. 205 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limit Signs.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received representations that the location of the thirty miles per hour limitation signs outside towns and villages in rural Ireland is contributing to the non-observance of the speed limits: and if he is taking any steps in the matter.

I have received some representations that in certain cases the speed limit signs are located too far out from the built-up areas. I have also received representations that in certain cases the signs should be moved further out. All these representations are being considered in the review of the speed limits at present being carried out, in the first instance by the local technical committees.

Has the Minister any power to make, and, if so, has he any intention of making, interim alterations, pending a more permanent and complete revision of the scheme of signs?

These in a sense could be regarded as my efforts in the interim in that the local technical committees were to meet and consider these matters at the end of this year, whereas some months ago I took it on myself to indicate to them that in view of the various complaints that had been made, they might meet forthwith to consider the complaints and make proposals, if necessary. They have since been considering the matter and I am awaiting their reports on the various suggestions and complaints. From receipt of any new proposals they may send to my Department, no great time should elapse in having the changes made if they are thought worthwhile.

Will the Minister ensure, when this review is taking place, that the sergeant in every Garda station is consulted, because I know that in many areas the sergeant was not consulted, nor was any other member of the Garda Síochána?

That is entirely contrary to what I understand to be the case and was intended to be the case, that the local technical committees should consider these matters and report to their local authorities. Those technical committees were proposed to be made up of the technical officers of the local authorities, together with the local gardaí. Who has changed that in any particular station I certainly do not know.

It is usually the superintendent, who does not know anything at all about the local area.

He might say the same about the Deputy.
