Vol. 206 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tariff Reductions: Wages of Industrial Workers.

50.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what steps he intends to take to ensure that the workers in the factories adversely affected by the reduction of tariffs and increased quotas will be able to enjoy the increases in salaries and wages recently referred to by An Taoiseach.

I have no reason for assuming that the policy of a gradual reduction of tariffs and increase in quotas will prevent certain workers from sharing in the benefits of whatever increases in wages and salaries are negotiated.

The level of wages in any particular factory is determined by the ordinary process of negotiation and I cannot influence it directly but, as already announced, the Government has taken steps to give financial and other assistance to employers to adapt their undertakings to meet freer trade conditions.
