Vol. 206 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Court Proceedings for Non-Payment of Insurance Contributions.

68.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the fine imposed on a building contractor (particulars supplied) arising from the non-payment of social welfare contributions for the period January, 1961, to February, 1962, has been paid; and, if not, what steps are being taken in relation to the matter.

The prosecution brought in this case related only to offences committed in April, 1962. The fines imposed have been paid.

If the fines have been collected, would the Minister say why they have not been transferred to the Department of Social Welfare so as to give the worker the benefit which he is entitled?

I am afraid that is not a matter for me.

In view of the fact that the money has not been transferred from the Department of Justice to the Department of Social Welfare, will the Minister say whose responsibility it is?

I am dealing only with the question of the fines.

In the event of the Minister's statement in this matter not being clarified, will he state if there was a fine of £3, or a fine of £3, plus the money collected by the employer for stamps and not used to buy the stamps?

I am concerned only with the fines. There were civil proceedings in which decrees were granted.

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply, I propose, with your permission, Sir, to raise the matter on the Adjournment.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
