asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each year since the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956 came into force the number of licences granted by the courts, the number of permits granted by superintendents of the Garda Síochána, and the annual value of prizes offered in respect of lotteries.

There are no official records of the amounts provided in prizes in lotteries since the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, came into operation but, on the basis of such information as the Garda Síochána have, which includes accurate particulars in respect of periodical lotteries since the coming into force of the Periodical Lotteries Regulations in March, 1962, a rough approximation is that, in the past four years, the total value of prizes in lotteries averages about one and a half million pounds annually.
The figures for the number of licences and permits issued in the years 1956 to 1962 are in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.
