Vol. 206 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Gift Parcels.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that bona fide Christmas presents sent to their relations at home by Irish emigrants working in Great Britain and elsewhere, and particularly presents sent by fathers of families to their wives and children, will not be subjected to turnover tax or customs duty by the customs authorities.

As the Deputy has been informed in previous years, there are standing concessions for the relief of gift parcels from customs duties within certain limits.

These concessions, details of which were given in reply to a similar question put down by the Deputy in November, 1961, have now been extended to cover turnover tax.

I might also mention that turnover tax is not payable on any post parcel where the value of the goods does not exceed £20.
