Vol. 206 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oats Import Licences.

33.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the number of racehorses in training in this country; what was the date and the quantity of his last issue of import licences for oats; if these oats were intended also for use for brood mares and foals; and, if so, why.

I understand that the number of racehorses in training at present is something over 3,000.

The last licence for the import of oats for feeding to horses was issued on 11th June, 1963, the quantity involved being 1,000 tons. The import was authorised for feeding to racehorses owned by members of the Irish Racehorse Trainers' Association and was not intended for use for brood mares and foals.

Does the Minister not agree that this licence was altogether too generous and that there is no reason why brood mares and foals should have foreign oats?

I did not say it was issued for brood mares.

Does the Minister not think that, on the basis of 18 tons per day, and considering only a stone is consumed per racehorse per day in training, that his 1,000 licence was altogether too generous?

I am always being advised by Deputies over there, especially Deputy Donegan, to consult farming organisations and in matters of this kind, I am always very anxious to consult them and, the Deputy may take it, act largely with their approval.

Question No. 34.

Had the Minister, in fact, the approval of the National Farmers' Association on the issue of this licence?

I have called Question No. 34.

In all such cases, consultations take place.

Were the NFA consulted?

The Deputy must cease this questioning across the floor of the House. I have called Question No. 34.
