Vol. 206 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Piped Water Supplies.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government the original estimated cost of the regional and village schemes necessary to provide piped water for the unserviced areas of the country; and if it is now a fact that the actual cost is four times greater than the original estimate.

When the current national drive for the improvement of water supply and sewerage services was launched in 1959 a total expenditure of £35 million was envisaged on public schemes. Of this amount some £30 million was referable to water supply schemes. At 30th September last the total value of schemes comprised in the various county programmes was estimated at £36.5 million, of which £27.8 million was referable to water supply schemes.

There is, therefore, no ground whatever for the suggestion in the latter part of the question.
