Vol. 207 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Prices for Farm Produce.

53.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he agrees that there is a reasonable case for an increase in the prices of (1) milk, (2) sugar beet, (3) barley and (4) wheat, owing to increasing costs of production; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

It is usual at this time of the year for a Government to consider matters such as those mentioned in the question and announce their decisions thereon.

In the case of sugar beet the company and the growers' representatives have already agreed on the price for the coming year.

Would the Minister not agree that it is of the greatest urgency that, if he intends to give increased prices for barley and wheat, he should now announce that so that growers may plan their sowings before sowing time?

The Deputy can be assured I shall make that announcement.

Before polling day.

May we take it there will be an increase not only in the price of barley but in the price of wheat?

The Deputy may take it there will be an announcement made in time to meet the full requirements of those who grow these crops.

Before sowing time.

When the Minister is taking prices into consideration would he remember that the price of barley in this country is the lowest in Europe?

The Minister, when considering these matters, takes everything into consideration.
