Vol. 207 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aer Lingus Transatlantic Cargo Rates.

57.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Aer Lingus propose to cut their transatlantic cargo rates; if so, for what rates and on what routes; whether this is by general agreement with other airlines; whether any loss is anticipated as a result; and, if so, whether this will have to be met by way of an Exchequer contribution.

As from 1st April, 1964, a new agreement on transatlantic cargo rates by all members of the International Air Transport Association will become effective subject to the approval of the Governments concerned.

There will be no change in the general cargo rate but certain specific commodities, including yarn, thread, cloth, clothing, footwear, garments, parts of automobiles and agricultural machines, electrical appliances and machines and tools, will be carried at reduced rates.

Aerlinte, as a member of the International Air Transport Association, will charge these rates on their Dublin-Shannon to Boston-New York routes. The introduction of the new rates is not expected to result in any loss of revenue to the Company; in fact, it is expected that the rates will stimulate new traffic.
