Vol. 207 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Report of Commission on Revival of Irish.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he will have a full English version of the Report of the Commission on the Revival of Irish published as soon as possible.

It is not intended to publish a full English version of the Report.

I should explain that a full English version of the Report was not presented to me by the Commission; the only documents that were so presented to me have been published, namely, the Report itself in Irish and a Summary of the Report in English. The preparation and printing of a full English version would cost approximately £1,500, and it would be several months before it would be available. In view of the fact that the Summary in English is already available, I am not satisfied that the demand for a full English version of the Report would justify its production.

Are we, therefore, to take the Taoiseach's word that the English Report contains more or less what is in the Irish Report?

The Deputy has to take the Commission's word for it.

The Commission have no responsibility to this House.

It is their Summary. They prepared the Summary in English. It was the Commission who prepared the Summary in English which was published.

Does the Taoiseach not consider that we should have this Report in English?

I do not think so. Apart from the practical difficulties of producing a version of the Report in English in time, now that the Summary in English has been published, I do not think the demand for a full English version of the Report would be appreciable.

You do not want anybody to read the full Report.

I think there would be a greater demand for the English rather than the Irish version.

Does the Taoiseach say he got a Report in English.

A Summary.

A full Report?

No. There were two documents from the Commission —one in Irish and the Summary in English prepared by them.

How does the Taoiseach know it is a true Summary?

If we got only what we have already got, an awful lot of Deputies will be asked to buy a pig in a poke, including the Taoiseach.

I think a lot of them can read it for themselves.
