Vol. 207 No. 1

Written Answers. - Redundant Bus Conductors.

214.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power, under what section of the Transport Act, 1958 agreement was made with bus conductors rendered redundant because of the operation of one-man buses, to give them the option to (a) accept work as drivers, if suitable, (b) accept transfer as conductors, or (c) accept agreed compensation per week for their working life expectancy.

The agreement made between CIE and the trade unions on the occasion of the settlement in May, 1963 of the one-man bus dispute was not made pursuant to any provision of the Transport Act, 1958, but in the normal course of industrial negotiation. Full details of the agreement were published in the Press.

Employees dismissed on redundancy arising out of the implementation of the one-man bus operation may qualify for entitlement to statutory compensation by virtue of an Order made by me under Section 14 (6) of the Transport Act, 1958.
