Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cheap Fuel Scheme: Supplies of Turf.

75.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that on two out of the five working days preceding last Christmas there was no turf available for old age pensioners at the Terenure turf depot in Dublin; if he will state why this was so; and if, having regard to the fact that it frequently happens that there is no turf available at that depot, he will have steps taken to effect regular deliveries of turf to it to prevent the stocks ever being totally depleted.

I have ascertained from the Dublin Health Authority, which administers the Cheap Fuel Scheme in Dublin city, that there was no interruption of supplies in the period of five days preceding Christmas, but on Friday, 20th December, there was some slight delay owing to a supply vehicle arriving behind schedule. I am assured that regular deliveries of turf are made to this depot and there is always a supply available for recipients.

76.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of each depot for the supply of turf to welfare recipients in Dublin City (a) its location, (b) its turf capacity, (c) the number and quantity of turf deliveries per week and (d) the number of persons receiving turf.

The location and capacity of each depot is shown in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. The information asked for at (c) and (d) of the question is not available in my Department.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the names of the contractors for the supply of turf to depots in Dublin for distribution to the needy, the date upon which they were appointed, and the terms and duration of their appointment.

The turf issued under the Dublin City Cheap Fuel Scheme is obtained from Bord na Móna by the Dublin Health Authority. Arrangements for the haulage of the turf from Bord na Móna bogs are made by the authority.
