Vol. 207 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Work for State Bodies done Abroad.

20.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has received from the Workers' Union of Ireland a resolution deploring the action of State bodies, including Aer Lingus and Irish Shipping, in sending work, which was hitherto performed in Ireland, abroad to be carried out; whether he has investigated the situation described in this resolution; and what action he has taken in the matter.

I have not received the copy of the resolution referred to but I have seen its terms since the Deputy put down his question. The arrangement for the performance of work for State-sponsored bodies is one for the companies concerned. However, I have been informed by Aer Lingus that it is only in very isolated and unusual cases that work is carried out outside their own workshops.

In the case of Irish Shipping Ltd., as indicated in reply to a question about the same subject on 6th November, 1962, the company continue to have their vessels overhauled and repaired at Irish yards whenever it is feasible and economic to do so.
