Vol. 207 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sending of Irish Troops to Cyprus.

7.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Government have been approached with regard to sending Irish troops to Cyprus; if so, by whom; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have received no request to send troops to Cyprus.

If there is a request for troops under the auspices of the United Nations to help Archbishop Makarios and the Cypriot Government, may I take it that our Government will not look with an unfriendly eye on the request?

That is a separate question.

Was any approach made indirectly to the Government through any of our Ambassadors on this matter?

I have answered that question.

Will this be a Government decision or must it necessarily come before this House?

It will have to come before the House. The House will certainly know.

Am I right in thinking that the legislation which covered the sending of troops to the Congo did not apply specifically to the Congo?

It involves a Resolution of the House.

In respect of the Congo only?

In either case.
