Vol. 207 No. 12

Written Answer. - Use of Motor Vehicles by Postmen.

11.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if there is any regulation which forbids the use of motor vehicles by postmen in the course of their official duties; and, if so, if the regulation applies in all cases, or if it is waived in the case of postmen who are suffering from ill health.

There is no regulation which forbids the use of motor vehicles by postmen in the course of their official duties.

Rural postmen are ordinarily required to perform their posts on foot and pedal cycle, but permission to use his own transport, including a motor vehicle, is given to any postman who wishes to do so subject to his undertaking to maintain regular deliveries and to comply with certain conditions, mainly relating to insurance.

On Tuesday 18th February, I asked a question of the Minister for Local Government, Question No. 36 on the Order Paper of that day. I should like to have your permission to raise the matter on the Adjournment, Sir.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
