Vol. 207 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - College of Art Appointments.

13.

asked the Minister for Education the method by which the recent four appointments to the College of Art teaching staff were made; whether the posts were advertised in the public press, if so, when, and in what newspapers; and whether he intends to take any additional steps in order to further improve the teaching and other facilities at the National College of Art.

Appointments to the staff of the National College of Art are, in the case of whole-time permanent posts, made on the recommendation of the Civil Service Commissioners. In the case of part-time posts, which are filled on a sessional basis, the normal method of appointment is by selection from a panel of persons regarded as suitable for the particular work in question. The four appointments referred to in the Deputy's question were part-time appointments and were made in accordance with the normal method. Arrangements are in train for the appointment through the Civil Service Commissioners of a professor and an assistant professor to the staff of the College.

I am glad to hear the Minister's proposal. Does he intend to make these four posts permanent?

That seems to be a separate question.

They are part-time posts and there is no intention of making them permanent.
