Vol. 208 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - River Boyne Drainage.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance what developments have taken place in relation to the arterial drainage of the River Boyne since a reply of 19th June 1962.

Since June, 1962 work on the design of a drainage scheme for this catchment has continued and steady progress has been made. To date, design has been completed for approximately 500 miles of the 1,500 miles of channel in the catchment.

Did I understand the Parliamentary Secretary to say since June, 1963?

I said "since June 1962".

The Parliamentary Secretary said 1963. When is the work going to commence?

As I informed the Deputy a few months ago, it is hoped to commence some time in 1967. That might not happen, of course.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in 1962 he told me the work would start in three or four years? Surely his arithmetic will teach him that 1967 is slightly beyond that?

It is only five years.

I am aware that I indicated in a reply to the Deputy that the work would probably start in 1967.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not aware that on 19th June 1962, he said three or four years?

Well, three or four years.

That is Fianna Fáil three or four years. It is about as accurate as they are in other things.

At least we do the work and pay for it.

You only started the work because I gave instructions to start it.
