Mr. Belton

asked the Minister for Social Welfare what the increases in social welfare benefits for January 1964 were above those of December 1963, and the total payment for January 1964.

The increases in social welfare benefits for January, 1964, as compared with December, 1963, were 5/- weekly in the basic personal rates of disability and unemployment benefits, maternity allowance, widow's contributory pension and old age contributory pension. In addition, the allowance for an adult dependant, where payable with any of those benefits, was increased by 5/- weekly except for dependants of old age contributory pensioners in respect of whom the increase was 2/6d. weekly.

The provisional total expenditure on social welfare payments in January, 1964, was £4,192,013, an increase of £510,255 over the corresponding figure for December, 1963.
