Vol. 208 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accession to GATT.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if it is intended to renew this country's application for accession to GATT.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if this country will participate in the Tariff Conference listed for commencement in Geneva in May of this year.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.

The question of proceeding with our application for accession to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is still under consideration. I cannot, therefore, make a statement, at this stage, on our participation in the Trade Negotiations Conference which is due to commence in Geneva in May, 1964, under the aegis of the GATT.

The Taoiseach is no doubt aware that the preparations are going on for this Conference in Geneva at the moment. Could he indicate when he will be able to give a decision on our accession to GATT, which is necessary before we take part in this conference?

I do not think there is any particular advantage in trying to rush a decision. It is probable the situation may clarify itself within the next month or two.
