Vol. 208 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Meat Prices.

23.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the proposal to increase meat prices; and that price increases of this nature will, if permitted, completely negative the advantages of the twelve per cent wage increase recently negotiated; and, if so, if he has satisfied himself that the price increases are justified.

I have read in the newspapers suggestions that the favourable prices now ruling for cattle may be reflected in an increase in meat prices, but I have no information of any general proposal in this regard. The Deputy is possibly aware that there is traditionally a wide range of prices for fresh meat and it is not at all clear that the fixing of maximum prices for particular cuts would be in the public interest.

Is the Minister aware that the price of cattle fell slightly yesterday and would he think the price of meat might fall accordingly?

I would expect the price of meat to follow the price of cattle.
