Vol. 208 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchasing Power of Pound.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the present purchasing power of the £1 in relation to its purchasing power on 1st January, 1954.

Estimates of the purchasing power of money are based on the retail price index numbers which are calculated in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August, and mid-November, each year. It is estimated on the basis of these index numbers that at mid-November, 1963 (the latest date for which the index number has been computed) £1 would purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as would 15s. 1d. at mid-February, 1954.

3.

asked the Taoiseach the present purchasing value of the £1 compared with its corresponding purchasing value in 1937.

It is estimated on the basis of the retail price index numbers that, at mid-November, 1963 (the latest date for which the index number has been calculated), £1 would purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as would 6s. 6d. in the year 1937.
