Vol. 208 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Royal Hospital, Kilmainham.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is in a position to say when reconstruction work will be completed on the old Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin; and when it is expected that the folk museum will be established there.

The reconstruction of the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, is being carried out in two stages viz.

Stage I: the elimination of dry rot and the restoration of the fabric in the North wing, which contains the Great Hall and the chapel. This part of the work will be completed this year.

Stage II: the restoration of the other three wings and the adaptation of the entire building for museum purposes. The planning of this stage is in hands but having regard to the amount of detailed work which is involved, it is unlikely that building operations will commence before 1966. The scheme will take about three years to complete.

When the first portion is completed, is it proposed to use it as a museum?
