Vol. 208 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of Fresh Fish.

39.

asked the Minister for Lands whether since the beginning of the Easter Recess he has had any further talks with fishermen and/or fish importing interests with regard to the licensed import of fresh fish; whether the suspension of such imports is still in force; and whether any agreement has been reached as between fishermen, fish importers and retailers, and the Department as to future imports.

The importation of fresh fish was discussed with representatives of fishermen and importers at separate meetings on 16th March. These imports are intended to supplement home landings by bridging the gap between supply and demand and, in maintaining such a delicate balance, it would be unrealistic to expect complete agreement between home producers and importers. Licences are granted whenever we are satisfied that imports are warranted.

Would the Minister state if any deep freeze plant has been handed over to the co-operative establishment or to the fishermen?

I have not got that information before me.

Would the Minister look into the matter because if such a plant and holding space were available to the fishermen, they could hold supplies for a lacuna period and avoid the necessity of importing fish under licence?

I shall have the Deputy's suggestion examined.
