Vol. 208 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enniscrone (Sligo) Marine Work.

19.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will take all practical steps to ensure that the marine work, including a storm wall, at Enniscrone Pier, County Sligo will be completed while the machinery owned by the Office of Public Works is still there.

Improvement works costing about £9,000, for which a State grant of 50 per cent was authorised, have just been completed at Enniscrone. Any further works would be a matter for Sligo County Council.

Is the Minister aware that already representations have been made to his Department in connection with the storm wall at Enniscrone and that the works, which have been executed and for which Sligo County Council paid 50 per cent of the cost, may be impaired if the storm wall is not finished? Further, is the Minister aware that machinery belonging to the marine section of the Office of Public Works is still at Enniscrone and, therefore, it would be a simple matter for his Department to carry out the works? I do know that the Office of Public Works pushed this work in connection with the pier on to the Minister's Department. I should like to hear the Minister's comments.

The information at my disposal is that this work was completed on 30th March and that the completed works will be handed over to the county council this week. I understand that the question of the provision of a storm wall was, in fact, examined but that it was thought not to be justified, at least at the moment, and that even if it were completed it would not give complete shelter. I can assure the Deputy that any marine work is not a simple matter and requires considerable examination.
