Vol. 208 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin One-Way Streets.

44.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, having regard to the frequency with which motor vehicles are observed moving in the wrong direction along Dublin's new one-way streets, particularly Capel Street and the Quays, he will have steps taken to ensure by means of additional sign posts, and white lines and arrows on roadways, that adequate warning notice of one-way rules is given to all concerned.

45.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government when white lines to indicate traffic lanes will be painted on all one-way streets in Dublin to ensure the full and safe use of such streets.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 45 together. The matters referred to are being considered by the authorities concerned, namely, the Dublin Corporation and the Garda Síochána.

Mr. Ryan

May I plead with the Minister to use his good offices to see that better signs are provided immediately; otherwise, there may be loss of life or very serious injuries? One cannot go into the city on any day without seeing several cars proceeding in the wrong direction; in some cases even aided by directions from members of the Garda Síochána who are supposed to be on duty.

In reply to the Deputy, it was either on the day after or two days after the introduction of these one-way traffic regulations that I made my views known to the authorities concerned and, as I have told the House, those authorities are at present considering what they may do further about these markings.

Mr. Ryan

May I again ask the Minister to give an assurance that he will expedite the consideration of that by these slow moving gentlemen and see that something is done before people lose their lives in these streets?

I think the fact of the matter is that I have somewhat anticipated the Deputy's question.

Mr. Ryan

Nothing has been done.

Nothing has yet been seen to be done but that does not follow that nothing is being done.

Mr. Ryan

Will the Minister draw the attention of his colleague the Minister for Justice, to the fact that members of the Garda Síochána——

(Interruptions.)

That is completely unnecessary in this matter.

Mr. Ryan

They are doing nothing about it. I am concerned with the lives and limbs of citizens.

The Deputy has asked four supplementary questions of the very same nature.

Mr. Ryan

I know, Sir, but the Minister's answers are of the very same nature.

Question No. 46.

The Deputy should have some manners.

Mr. Ryan

Are we to understand that the Tánaiste knows something about them at last?
