Vol. 208 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Curragh Married Quarters.

91.

asked the Minister for Defence how many married quarters in the Curragh Camp are at present vacant; how many have been vacant for over three months, six months, nine months, and 12 months respectively; and if he will state the cause of the delay in reconstructing them and making them available for personnel on the waiting list.

There are 16 soldiers' married quarters vacant in Campa an Churraigh at present; 14 have been vacant for over three months; 13 have been vacant for over six months; 13 have been vacant for over nine months and 12 have been vacant for over 12 months. Thirteen of the 16 quarters at present vacant are in Dún Uí Chonghaille where work on the modernisation of 16 quarters is expected to commence at an early date. The remaining three vacant quarters are in other Barracks in Campa an Churraigh and are being repaired and renovated after evacuation by former occupants. These will be re-occupied as soon as possible.

The delay in commencing the reconstruction work in the married quarters in Dún Uí Chonghaille arose from the necessity for careful examination of the many problems involved in the conversion to the best advantage of these old and unusual type quarters as well as from the necessity to have most of the quarters vacated before work could commence.
