Vol. 209 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of GATT.

1.

asked the Taoiseach whether membership of GATT will be inconsistent with the Anglo-Irish trade agreements; whether any amendments in the agreements will be necessary if this country joins GATT; and, if so, what amendments.

As I indicated in this House on Wednesday last, the incompatibility between our existing Trade Agreements with the United Kingdom and the rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is one of the matters which will be covered in the negotiations for membership of the GATT. The question of what, if any, adjustments to the Trade Agreements would be necessary will depend on the outcome of the negotiations and on the terms of accession which the Contracting Parties would propose in our case. We shall, of course, have discussions on the subject with the British Government.
