Vol. 209 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pre-fabricated Classrooms.

54.

asked the Minister for Education if grants are payable in respect of the erection of the pre-fabricated type of classrooms; if so, what type or types qualify for such grants; if grants have been paid in respect of these classrooms; and if he will state the number and amount paid.

In the case of vocational schools regulations which govern the financing of school buildings provided by conventional building methods apply equally in the case of buildings of a pre-fabricated type. The type of pre-fabricated structure normally provided consists of semi-pre-fabricated concrete buildings and modular semi-pre-fabricated wooden buildings and may be regarded as a permanent school building. The information sought as to the number of such buildings erected and the cost is not available in my Department.

In the case of national schools my Department allow grants towards the cost of pre-fabricated timber classrooms where a building is required for only a limited number of years. Authorisation has been given for the provision of 108 of these pre-fabricated classrooms in national schools and my Department have so far sanctioned grants amounting to £30,000 approximately for the provision of 44 of them.
