Vol. 209 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Used Bailer Twine.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the fact that bailer twine is so expensive at the moment and that farmers can only use this type of twine once and are left with large used quantities of it on hands, he will give favourable consideration to recommending to manufacturers that they initiate a scheme for the return of the used twine by the farmers for reprocessing, as was done during the scarcity in the war years.

I understand from the manufacturer concerned that the reprocessing of used bailer wine would be an uneconomic proposition and that the practice was adopted during the war years only because of the grave scarcity at that time.

Can anything be done to control or keep down to a reasonable level the price of the twine? Last year the price soared for some reason.

Because of the increase in the cost of raw materials which had to be imported.

For that reason would it not be possible to have the twine collected and used again?

As I intimated in my reply, it would be uneconomic and only in times of scarcity, such as in emergency years, would that course be justified.
