Vol. 209 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Persons in Insurable Employment.

5.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons in insurable employment in this country in each year since 1957.

6.

asked the Taoiseach the estimated average weekly number of persons in insurable employment computed from social insurance stamps sold in each of the twelve months ended 31st December in the period 1956 to 1963.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 5 and 6 together and to circulate in the Official Report, a statement giving the estimated average weekly numbers in insurable employment in each year 1956 to 1963.

These estimates are derived from the average weekly numbers of social welfare insurance stamps sold. In estimating the numbers, 52 weeks have been taken in each year, though in certain of the different insurance years for men and women covered by the data there were actually 53 weeks' stamps required. Some of the extra stamps in respect of these years were probably bought in the first quarter of the following year and since it is not possible to ascertain in respect of stamps sold, the insurance year in which the relevant employment occurred, it is not possible validly to correct the figures for this difference. Changes in the upper salary limit for compulsory insurance of non-manual workers and changes in their income levels may also affect the comparability of the figures.

Following is the statement:
