Vol. 209 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Survey.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has now received the results of the housing survey from all local authorities involved; and, if not, when he expects this survey to be completed.

Completed reports of the survey of unfit housing have been received in respect of 17 county health districts and from all but one urban authority. While it has been possible from these reports and from estimates made by housing authorities who have not completed the survey, to obtain a reasonable estimate of the extent of the unfit housing problem, each housing authority should in its own interest complete the survey in detail so that they will have an accurate and up to date assessment of the condition of the housing stock of their area as a guide for the future planning of housing schemes.

Could the Minister say which urban authority has not submitted this survey yet?

I could, but I should not like to.

Is it the intention of the Minister to advise local authorities, or have they been advised already, to keep their surveys up to date? I remember in the past ten or 15 years local authorities were working on surveys that had been carried out many years ago. Have they been advised to keep their surveys up to date?

They have been advised and the law dictates to them that they keep up-to-date surveys which they never have had except once in a blue moon. In addition, I have made it clear the intention is to come before the House with a provision incorporated in housing legislation which will require them not only to keep their surveys up to date but to programme their building projects for the future some time ahead.

The survey does not include local authority housing, no matter what condition it is in?

Of course, we would expect local authorities at least to be aware of the condition of their own houses.

They are not.
