Vol. 209 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Housing.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of new houses built by Limerick Corporation in each of the financial years, 1962-63 and 1963-64.

Limerick Corporation completed 50 houses in the financial year, 1962-63 and 101 in 1963-64.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of all housing schemes, local authority and private, at present being carried out in Limerick city.

Work is at present in progress on 54 local authority houses at Tank Field-Greenhill, 86 at St. John's and 254 at Bullfield.

According to my Department's records building projects comprising about 734 houses are being undertaken at present in Limerick City by speculative builders and public utility societies with the aid of housing grants. The houses are at various stages of planning and construction. In addition, a number of individual applications are proceeding but precise details in relation to the number of these houses in progress are not readily available.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the proposed housing scheme at Watergate, Limerick.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of 12th December, 1963, on this subject. I understand that the housing authority is preparing a detailed design for the first phase of the scheme and in this connection has appointed a consulting engineer to carry out a survey of the site.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of applicants for local authority houses in Limerick city on 31st March, 1964.

I understand that there were 690 approved applicants for rehousing on the Limerick Corporation's waiting list on 31st March, 1964.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is satisfied with the progress being made by Limerick Corporation towards the solution of the deplorable housing situation which has existed in Limerick city for some time; and whether he has considered introducing emergency measures to deal with the problem.

The answer to the first part of the question is "no". In regard to the second part, I am not clear what the Deputy has in mind by emergency measures but I am very willing to take any steps open to me to assist the housing authority in overcoming their problems as quickly as possible.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any proposal has been received in his Department from Limerick Corporation for the provision of prefabricated dwellings in Limerick city.

The only proposal that I have received from Limerick Corporation in regard to prefabricated dwellings is that relating to the provision of six caravan-type chalets for one and two-person families at present occupying dangerous buildings. This proposal which is to invite tenders, without commitment, for the purpose of ascertaining costs and delivery times, is being considered.
