Vol. 209 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stamp Duty on House Purchase.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider reducing the stamp duty on the purchase of houses of a value of £3,000 or less in order to further assist those endeavouring to provide their own accommodation.

Persons buying new houses are catered for under existing law, which provides for a reduced stamp duty of £1 per cent on purchases for which grants under the Housing Acts are made. I regret that I am precluded by budgetary considerations from extending the application of the reduced rate to other house purchases which are now chargeable with stamp duty at rates up to £3 per cent.
