asked the Minister for Finance the amount of revenue collected in the past three years from estate duty; and the amount that it cost the State to collect such revenue.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revenue from Estate Duty.
As the information is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report. Since the death duty system comprises legacy and succession duties as well as estate duty and since it is not practicable to determine the proportion of the cost of collection that is attributable to estate duty only, a column is included to show the net receipt of all death duties.
Following is the statement:
Year ended 31st March |
Net Receipt of Estate Duty (including Probate and Account Duty) |
Net Receipt of all Death Duties |
Estimated cost of collection of all Death Duties (including cost of services rendered by other Departments). |

Is this question of estate duty not administered by one particular section of the Minister's Department?
Well, partially. There would, of course, be certain officers in charge of death duties and certain officers in charge of income tax, and so on. Some of the staff, of course, would be common to both.
Could the Minister not hazard a guess as to the approximate cost?
Yes; I am giving an estimate of the cost.
