Vol. 209 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick City Speed Limit Prosecutions.

100.

asked the Minister for Justice what checks as to whether the speed limit is being exceeded have been employed in the City of Limerick during the past 12 months; and how many prosecutions have been instituted for breaking the speed limit in Limerick city during the same period.

Speed-checks are carried out regularly and no special records of the number of checks are compiled. Three types of speed-checks have been used in Limerick city, namely, radar meter, Garda motor cycle with checked speedometer and Garda car with checked speedometer. The number of radar units issued to the Force was more than doubled some months ago and accordingly in Limerick as elsewhere, the Garda Síochána will be able, to an increasing extent, to rely on them for the enforcement of the Regulations.

In the year ended 31st March, 150 detections of breaches of the speed limits were made by the Garda Síochána in Limerick city. Proceedings were instituted in 110 cases. The others, where the amount by which the limit was exceeded was small and not of itself dangerous, were dealt with by way of caution.
