Vol. 209 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Appointment.

17.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that a person (name supplied) was called by his Department for interview for a job in the telephone exchange, Exchequer Street, Dublin on 16th December last, to which he travelled at his own expense from Mayo; that he was informed that his interview had been successful; that on 7th April he received a notice requiring him to begin training in Dublin on 8th May; that he gave notice to his previous employer in Mayo, came to Dublin at his own expense and paid a week's lodging in advance; and that when he called to Exchequer Street on 7th May he was informed that he had now been found unsuitable for training and that the Department had forgotten to inform him; and whether, in view of the fact that the person involved is now both considerably out of pocket and unemployed owing to the apparent incompetence of his Department, he will carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and recompense the person for the damage which has been done to his career.

I have carried out a thorough investigation into the matters referred to in the Deputy's question and I find that the case was mishandled. The person in question is being offered the employment for which he had applied and the question of recouping him the out-of-pocket expenses incurred by him as a result of his unnecessary journey to Dublin is being sympathetically considered.

I wish to thank the Minister for his reply and for the investigation. It has come to my notice since that there was a similar occurrence in relation to a man from Kilkenny who, I understand, received the very same treatment.

I have not heard it.

I shall be glad to supply the Minister with the details.

And I shall be glad to investigate that also.
