Vol. 210 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Physicians.

1.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Health if he will list the health authorities which employ a county physician whose duties comprise both medical and obstetrical care and treatment for patients in the county hospital.

I assume that the Deputy does not wish to have included those health authority areas in which, by reason of the existence of specialist appointments, the county physician does not provide, as part of his normal duties, obstetrical care and treatment for patients in the county hospital. On this assumption the list is as follows: Cavan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Tipperary (North Riding), Tipperary (South Riding), Westmeath and Wexford.

I should mention that in the case of Cork there are two posts of county physician, based on the county hospitals at Bantry and Mallow. In both these hospitals, obstetrics are the responsibility of the physician.
