Vol. 210 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Five-Day Week.

12.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is now proposed to introduce the five-day week for Civil Servants; if so, when; and what daily additions to the working hours of 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be made.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance what is the latest position in regard to the granting of a five-day week for State Servants; whether in fact the matter has been agreed to in principle; whether it has been referred to a sub-committee for the purpose of resolving certain contingent issues; what these issues are; and when it is expected that finality in the matter will be reached.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 12 and 13 together.

As I have stated in reply to a number of previous questions on this matter, a claim for the introduction of a five-day week in the Civil Service is under discussion at the Civil Service General Council in accordance with the Scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Civil Service. Under the terms of the Scheme, the proceedings of the General Council are confidential and I am, accordingly, precluded from disclosing any information concerning the matters under discussion until I have conveyed my decision on an agreed recommendation of the Council.
